Welcome to Spotlight on Health

Spotlight on Health is a production of Spotlight on Hope, Inc. – a 501 c 3 not for profit registered in New York. Spotlight on Hope and the radio program were created and founded by Tom McNulty.

Tom began in radio in 1995 at AM 930 WBEN with his own live, health talk radio show, Frankly Speaking. The show ran for four years. During that span, he also did a show, Mind Matters on Oldies 104 WHTT-FM for two years. “Here I am trying to tape my show with behavioral health experts and Danny Neaverth, Sr. and Jr. are making faces at me while I’m taping. It was fun and we covered tough subjects,” McNulty said. With a change in ownership, I moved the show to WHLD-AM, ¬†then switched to Here’s To Your Health, sponsored by a small physician group, but it didn’t catch on there. He remained at WBEN until 1999, then moved to CBS Radio and WECK-AM 1230 where Highlights on Health -a show totally sponsored by Buffalo Medical Group and its medical director Dr. Richard Peer. “It was a terrific show, produced by my long time buddy, Bob Hill, and we helped promote local health issues with more than 120 physicians from that group. The audience loved it and it was a great fit with the WECK-AM listeners,” McNulty added.

Next came Spotlight on Health in 2003 at CBS Radio (later Regent Communications and Townsquare Media) and Tom was reunited with Bob Hill – now an award winning radio veteran. “Bob was my pal, mentor and dear friend. He doesn’t realize how much he taught me and how much I watched and listened to him. He was very creative and he taught me to open the possibilities of what I could explore to help educate listeners. He made me laugh and we laughed often. He was insightful, well-read, and loved Buffalo and the WNY community. He retired and moved to South Florida, but we stay in touch,” McNulty commented.

Spotlight on Health is all about health education, population disease management, health promotion and the healthcare values of integrating primary and specialty care with behavioral health. The show remains sponsored by DENT Neurologic Institute (www.dentinstitute.com), the nation’s largest neurology and neuroscience research practice and Catholic Health’s Mercy Hospital of Buffalo (www.chsbuffalo.org). Both started with the show and remain sponsors since 2003. More recently, LifeCell Dx ¬†(www.lifecelldx.com) and its founder, Dr. Lani Burkman have made a longterm commitment to the show, along with Success Stories, Inc. After Bob Hill retired to Florida, WYRK-FM veteran, Dale Mussen stepped in as Tom’s producer and the show hasn’t skipped a beat. “Dale is a pro and continues to teach me new broadcasting skills. He is so kind and willing to work with me on format, ideas, taking pictures of my guests, producing CDs for the guests and more. Dale is a good man, great at what he does and has a national reputation. His show is routinely #1 in our market – that’s tells you how lucky I am to have him with me,” McNulty added.

This new web library will host an ever-changing 50+ shows featuring critical health topics, great guests and a variety of health, medical and behavioral health topics. It will allow visitors to make copies of shows or listen to shows from anywhere. “So often I’d be asked, “where can I listen to a show I missed or I’d like to send a copy to a loved one” and I realized the web library made sense, so we crafted it in celebration of our 10th anniversary in 2013,” said McNulty.

Since starting at AM 930 WBEN, McNulty estimates he has hosted more than 800+ shows with no signs of stopping.
